Cosmetic Dentistry Overview

Chances are if you could change anything about yourself, one thing would be your smile. Why? Because your smile is a reflection of who you are! A smile says you're confident and friendly in both business and social settings. Your smile has everything to do with your appearance, image, self-confidence, and what people think about you.

If you look in the mirror and see dark, chipped, or crooked teeth, you know that others see the same. Wouldn't you rather attract attention with a sensational smile? Cosmetic dentistry gives you a second chance to make a good impression. Through the art of cosmetic dentistry, there's no reason why you shouldn't have that radiant smile that you've always wanted.

Most models and movie stars have had those "naturally perfect" smiles created for them by dentists. Modern cosmetic dentistry can create dramatic improvements without altering the basic structure of your mouth. Esthetic dental work is customized to your needs. We can take into consideration your personality, the shape of your face, and your desired outcome.

Whether your teeth would benefit from bleaching or whitening, orthodontics, porcelain veneers, replacing dark metal fillings with tooth-colored restorations, or replacing missing teeth with a more natural and more esthetic restoration: state-of-the-art dentistry at our office can help.

Bonding

Bonding is the use of tooth-colored composites to cover discolored spots, close gaps, repair chips and fractures, reshape turned or tipped teeth, and to make teeth look whiter. With proper care, these materials may last five or more years. Bonding is usually painless with no anesthesia and can be done in one appointment. more...

Replacing Missing Teeth

Missing teeth are both an esthetic and functional defect. A missing tooth in an area that shows when you smile is an obvious problem. A missing back tooth, while it may seem less noticeable, may be seen by others when you are talking or smiling. It may also cause tipping and other movements of the rest of your teeth, which can weaken these teeth, lead to cavities and gum disease, and cause shifting or collapsing that adversely affects your smile. Missing teeth can be replaced permanently and esthetically with either bridges or implants.

Using modern esthetic dental materials, we can make replacement teeth, often called bridges, that are natural-looking and permanently attached to adjacent teeth. Our newest materials require much less, or even none, of the metal reinforcement than used to be necessary for strength. This allows us to make bridges that look and function as if they are your own natural teeth, without the unnatural appearance of shadows and dark lines that used to be caused by metal show-through.

When it is necessary or desirable to replace teeth without the support of the surrounding teeth, we now can use synthetic roots called implants as supports for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace one tooth or a whole mouth full of teeth. Unlike dentures, implant-supported teeth work like real teeth, stay in place all the time, preserve the bone and muscle-tone of the area, and look like real and attractive teeth. Partial and complete removeable dentures can move during eating and talking, may require metal wires or clasps that show, require extra material to cover the roof of your mouth or lay under your tongue and actually cause the bone in the area of the missing teeth to dissolve. Removeable teeth are far from state-of-the-art. more...

Porcelain Veneers

What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin shells of ceramic material which are bonded to the front of teeth. They are highly resistant to permanent staining from coffee, tea, or even cigarette smoking. The wafer-thin porcelain veneers can achieve a tenacious bond to the tooth, resulting in a pleasing naturalness that is unsurpassed by other restorative options.

When would porcelain veneers be recommended?
Porcelain veneers are excellent in providing a conservative approach to changing a tooth's color, size, or shape. They are ideal for masking defects such as teeth stained by tetracycline or damaged by an injury. Patients with gaps betweent their front teeth or teeth that are chipped, worn, or crooked may consider porcelain veneers.

How long will the procedure take?
You will need three appointments for the entire procedure: diagnosis and treatment planning, preparation, and bonding.

How real do porcelain veneers look?
Porcelain veneers can look as natural and esthetic as any restorations we do for our patients. Veneers can make your teeth look better, but still look like "your" teeth. Porcelain veneers are what give many actors, models, entertainers, and sports stars their perfect "Hollywood" smiles. more...

Porcelain Crowns

Crowns are used to strengthen teeth damaged and weakened by cavities or trauma, even if they’ve been restored with filling material. New technology has allowed us to create all porcelain crowns (without metal) that look and reflect light like real teeth. Because porcelain crowns are no longer reinforced with metal, they are no longer plagued with the familiar dark or blue line at the interface of the crown and the tooth. Porcelain crowns can accomplish the same cosmetic concerns as veneers, but are placed over teeth that need strengthening as well. more...

Invisible Restorations

Invisible restorations of front teeth are often called bonding. With modern tooth-colored materials called composites, we can repair cavities, make teeth longer or wider, or cover discolored areas. Although composite materials are not as long-lasting as porcelain, they are often the best choice for smaller restorations and changes, and for fairly major changes to just one or two teeth.

Do you, or people you know, have teeth that are filled with black or silver material? Even though these are often not one of the six front teeth that are obvious in a mirror, dark fillings can ruin the appearance of your smile when seen from the side or when you are talking.

Strong and esthetic materials made of porcelain and resin mixtures are now the state-of-the-art for restoring back teeth.

There are also major advantages, besides esthetics, when these tooth-colored materials are used instead of old-fashioned amalgam (silver-mercury mixture). Tooth-colored restorations are generally bonded into or over the healthy part of the tooth. This means that the restored tooth is nearly as strong as a brand new tooth, instead of weakened by a silver-mercury filling. Bonding also eliminates the need to grind away healthy tooth structure to hold the restoration in place, as is often necessary with silver-mercury filling materials. Part of our goal is to save as much healthy tooth structure as possible.

Whether we are restoring the tiniest cavities or major broken areas, porcelain, composite, and polymer-based tooth-colored restorations are both beautiful and functional, and can greatly enhance the appearance of your smile.

Adult Orthodontics

Adult orthodontics has taken some great leaps forward in recent years. Cosmetic orthodontics to straighten crooked, crowded, or spaced teeth can now be finished in less than a year! Since 2000, we have been using a new technology called Invisalign, which can straighten crooked or spaced teeth without any braces or wires!

According to surveys, 50% of Americans ages 25 to 45 years old wish their teeth were straighter. How would it help you to have straighter teeth? Call Dr. Dunne for a free smile evaluation to discuss your goals and concerns for your smile.

Invisalign
Imagine orthodontics so invisible that no one will notice...until you end up with a beautiful smile! Invisalign uses a series of nearly undetectable "aligners" instead of brackets and wires. These thin plastic aligners are worn all the time except to eat, brush, and floss. A series of aligners is computer-generated to move your teeth from where they are to where you want them to be in two-week increments. Now you can go through complete orthodontic treatment in just 6 - 18 months without any noticeable signs that your teeth are undergoing treatment! more...
